A lawn aerator works by removing any blockages from your lawn so your soil can expand as the grass grows. Typically, a ½ inch diameter plug is removed every 2-6 inches across the lawn. However, the plug’s size depends on the type of soil you have and how compacted it is.

Hand aerators can be a struggle to operate, so it is best to rent a machine or have us do it for you. If you choose to do it yourself, make sure you use an aerator that will remove the soil plug and not contribute to the soil compaction.

Typically, you should aerate your lawn before the active growing season, but it really depends on the type of soil you have. If you have cool-season grass, it will begin growing at the end of summer. If you have warm-season grass, the growing period starts at the beginning of summer. We can help you figure out the grass species in your lawn.

If you have a sand-based lawn, you can manage only aerating it annually. For clay-based lawn, you should aerate it twice a year. Of course, each lawn depends on how much you use it. You can also pull out a small, 6-inch deep section of your lawn and if the roots go down an inch or two, then you will know you should aerate.
