This time of year, it seeme as though everyone burns candles. While they look harmless enough, they are a serious fire hazard. If you follow a few simple tips, you can enjoy them without fear of fire.
- Placement is everything. Keep them away from curtains, paper, bedding, walls, or any other items that will likely combust if they come in contact with an open flame. Remember, candle flames can build up to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Blow out your candles when you are not home, or when you are going to be out of a room for an extended amount of time. As a safer alternative, try battery-powered LED candles.
- Warn your children to keep away from candles, and NEVER to play with fire.
- Put out a candle with two inches of wax remainig, or a half inch in a container, to prevernt heat damage to furniture, or a glass container from bursting. Use non-combustible candleholder that can collect drippings and won't turn over.
