History

Back in the summer of 1996, I bought a 20” Sears lawnmower with the help of my new Sears credit card and a friend loaned me a trailer and John Welch Enterprises was in business and we haven’t stopped growing since! Of course my future wife, Kim would help me as needed, until I hired my first employee. He was a peach-fuzzed faced kid, just 14 years old named Scott. He helped out on Saturdays that long, hot summer. I say long and hot, because I worked full-time for Exteriors by Terry as a landscape foreman while launching my own business.

In the Spring of ’97, I purchased my first work truck, my first big step in the continued growth of the business.

By 2000, we were busy enough to support Scott (now 18! :-) and me. Meanwhile, Kim helped out as needed on top of her ‘real’ job. Within a year, we were profitable – and fortunate.

In 2003, my previous employer, Terry Courneen came to work for us as a designer/salesperson. His expertise has been invaluable to our success. Frankly, he’s one of the best improvement specialists/designers around!

The following year, we hired Jon Angel as our hardscape foreman, and let me tell you, this guy is incredible too! In a sense, the hiring of Jon along with my close relationship with Terry, really set us in motion.

Over the past few years, we have become a leading company in our industry. We received the coveted ICPI and NCMA certifications and we are not only New York’s first PICP certified installer, but as of March 10th (this year!) we are New York’s only PICP certified installer!

Today, I’m really proud to be able to unequivocally say, “We employ some of the best craftsmen in our industry.” The spirit at the company is exciting, dynamic and contagious. How can guys put in this kind of effort and produce such phenomenal results day in and day out?! It’s still amazing to me…. And you’ll be amazed too. That’s our promise. And, we keep them.
